Wellness Journal iOS App

Overview

The primary goal was to create a digital tool for cancer patients to help track health related data as they navigate their initial diagnosis and manage their ongoing treatment and wellness.

Timeline: 8 weeks

My Roles: User Research, Interaction Design, Prototyping

Actions

A project brief was created outlining the goals, user base and functionality.

One-on-one interviews with current and former cancer patients were conducted to help identify goals and tasks that patients typically perform while managing their initial diagnosis and ongoing treatments.

A competitive analysis was performed on existing cancer mobile apps to examine which functionality and features could be incorporated into the Wellness Journal mobile app in order to enhance the user experience.

UX Artifacts

The following UX artifacts were created as a result of the research:

  • Primary Persona

  • Sitemap

  • Wireframes

  • Interactive Prototype

User Persona

A primary user persona was developed from the data collected in the 1:1 interviews.

Site Map

A hierarchical tree structure was selected as the primary system due to the information rich nature of the application.

Wireframes

Content organization, hierarchy and user flow were explored starting with hand sketched wireframes. Comprehensive wireframes documenting navigation, content placement and user flows were developed in Adobe XD from the hand sketches.

Medium fidelity wireframes were developed from the initial hand sketched wireframes. Annotations were included to further explain interaction and functionality that could not be demonstrated in the flat wireframes.

Results

The primary result of this project was the creation of a click through prototype that focused on the usability and accessibility implications of the designed interactions.

In its current state, the prototype is ready
for an initial round of testing.

Lessons Learned

The key takeaway from this project was: Research, no matter how little, is invaluable to correctly defining your user’s goals and motivations. Without this knowledge, we cannot create experiences that value users and drive engagement.

Utilizing qualitative research methodologies revealed insights that shaped the functionality of the Wellness Journal app in ways that will empower patients to take control of their ongoing treatment and post-treatment care.
